Stop motion animation

Cel Based animation

Cel based animation is created using hand drawn images. A 30 second animation would use 250 images all hand drawn and if required with color added. To create a cel based animation you would have to first come up with a storyline so you know what images need to be drawn. The images have to be drawn on a clear sheet of plastic so that after each image is placed on top of the following you can see the difference in movement, after each image is placed on top of the following image a picture has to be taken so once all images have been laid on the pile once played back it will look as if it is a moving animation. An example of a cel based animator would be Walt Disney.

Pixilation animation

Pixilation animation is created with actual people to make them do anything depending on what the creator wants them to do. For example pixilation can give the impression of someone floating in mid-air across a room. To create a pixilation you will need to have access to a computer which has the correct software installed an example of this would be iStopMotion which is available on apple Macs. To create a pixilation animation you have to take pictures after each small movement a person makes and one played back it will give the impression of movement a very good example would be a pixilation animation of someone riding a human skateboard. An example of a pixilation animator would be Timon Dowdeswell.

Cut out animation

Cut out animation is created using photographs, which have been taken or images from the Internet or other sources. The images have to be relevant to the plot or storyline of the animation, which is going to be created. Once all of the images have been sourced and printed if there is any people there mouths will have to be cut out to make the impression of them talking in the animation. Creating small movements of the images and taking pictures after each small movement then make the animation and once it is all played back it gives the impression of movement. Sound can then be added over the top to give the impression of talking or sound effects depending on the theme of the animation. An example of a cut out animator would be Terry Gillian.

My animation

I think my animation worked quite well for an idea so simple. i didn't think it would turn out the way it did. Thank you for all the feedback you have given and i am glad you all like it and i will take into consideration your improvements i should make. To improve my animation i think i would re-save it so it was in better quality as at the moment it is a bit blurry when it is played in full screen. I will be re-saving my work in a better quality as when its played on the big screen it has a blurry image. Thank you for your feedback and i will post on here the same video but in better quality.

Animation timeline

Animation Timeline
  • 1824: Peter Roget presented his paper 'The persistence of vision with regard to moving objects' to the British Royal Society.

  • 1831:  Dr. Joseph Antoine Plateau (a Belgian scientist) and Dr. Simon Rittrer constructed a machine called a phenakitstoscope. This machine produced an illusion of movement by allowing a viewer to gaze at a rotating disk containing small windows; behind the windows was another disk containing a sequence of images. When the disks were rotated at the correct speed, the synchronization of the windows with the images created an animated effect.

  • 1889: Thomas Edison announced his creation of the kinetoscope which projected a 50ft length of film in approximately 13 seconds.

  • 1906: J. Stuart Blackton made the first animated film which he called "Humorous phases of funny faces." His method was to draw comical faces on a blackboard and film them. He would stop the film, erase one face to draw another, and then film the newly drawn face. The Ôstop-motionÕ provided a starting effect as the facial expressions changed be fore the viewerÕs eyes.

  • 1911: Winsor McCay produced an animation sequence using his comic strip character "Little Nemo."

  • 1914: Winsor McCay produced a cartoon called "Gertie, The Trained Dinosaur" which amazingly consisted of 10,000 drawings.

  • 1928: Walt Disney created the first cartoon with synchronized sound called "Steam Boat Willy".

  • 1937: Walt Disney’s snow white is released.

  • 1989: Wallace and gromit was first broadcast.

  • 1993: Jurassic Park use of CG for realistic living creatures.

  • 1995: Toy Story first full-length 3D CG feature film.

  • 2005: corpse bride is released.

  • 2009 fantastic Mr Fox is released.

  • 2010 despicable me is released.

  • 2011 Arthur Christmas is released.

My final movie

here is my final movie including the soundtrack:

I made my movie in istopmotion by taking 4 pictures of my bear in each outfit so that the final product would not go as fast as it would if i only took one. i then took a picture each time i moved my hand to make it look like I'm clicking my fingers which made him change outfits. I then added titles to my animation using imovie like in the pictures below.

This picture shows me adding my transitions between the title and the actual animation.

This shows me changing the text font and colour of my title of the animation.

This shows me changing the text font and colour of the end credits of my animation.

This shows me downloading my soundtrack Teddy bears picnic into itunes which i then added to my animation and i faded it out towards the end of my animation.

Titles and Credits for my animation

Below is a screenshot of my titles and credits that i have created in iMovie.
The title of my animation is Huggie the quick changing bear.
I have used the effects circle open which will lead to my animation being played after.
For the beginning credits i have used the centered credits and for the end of the animation i have used scrolling credits.

Plot of my animation:

I have had the idea that my animation will feature my teddy who starts off in on outfit and then i will have someone clicking their fingers in front of the teddy and after they have he will have magically changed by the click of their fingers. I will have credits at the beginning and end of my animation which will have the title of the animation fade in on the screen at the beginning and fade out at the end. The title of my animation will be Huggie the magically changing bear. There will be some music playing in background.

My own animation for my first assignment

I have had an idea to use pixilation animation for my animation.

The theme of my animation is to have one of my teddies ive had since i was a baby and to show him in his different fancy dress outfits a different outfit for each frame of the animation.

To create this idea i will research what outfits are available to buy for my teddy and i will also have to research what outfits he already has, i will also research if anyone has done anything like this before. I will collect my research and create a research folder.

Stop Motion Animation

here is the final cut of my circus video with a different sound track and titles. Enjoy XD

Stop Motion Animation

This is a lego circus which i added the audio to. To do this i used garageband i first dragged the movie into garageband and then i dragged the audio file in as well. I then cut away the extra audio which was apart of no video then i faded out the end of the audio file so when it came to the end of the film no sound was played. Enjoy XD
